For as long as I can remember I've had a fascination with all types of wildlife. As a kid I was privileged enough to have parents that allowed me to have all kinds of cool pets, but all the while they had a set rule that I would not be allowed to have a pet snake of any kind. In fact, I remember vividly my mother telling me that, "When you get older and have your own house you can have a pet snake." I don't think she thought at the time I would hold her to that. Not long after I was married I was given my first pet snake by a friend that worked at one of the local pet stores. It was a little Ball Python. From that point on I began putting together my collection of reptiles that varied from different species of geckos, to Bearded Dragons, and several types of snakes. A few years later I got the itch to start a business that would help pay for this chronic hobby that I had gotten so deeply involved with. In the fall of 2002, I started Kansas City Reptile Distributors. I developed many excellent customer contacts and business associates during the four years I operated KCRD. Soon, the business had out-grown my home and I knew that I would have to take the next step and open a store. So, in the summer of 2007, I found our original location, located at 77th and Leavenworth Road, and ironically almost five years to the day after KCRD went live, we opened House of Scales. Three years after we opened the store on Leavenworth Road, we decided to move to our currant location, located at 66th and Parallel Parkway. In three years we grew from 1100 square feet to over 2600! It has been the best business decision I've ever made. It has given me an opportunity to grow the business even more and at the same time offer my services to not only the entire country, but my community. At this time we are the only full-line, USDA licensed exotic pet store in the Kansas City metro area, offering hundreds of types of reptiles and amphibians as well as many kinds of exotic mammals, including Fennec Foxes, small primates, Kinkajous, Sugar Gliders, and Hedge Hogs, just to name a few. We proudly work hand-in-hand with many private breeders as well as many AZA accredited zoos around the country! If there is a pet you want, contact us and I assure you we can get it for you! I have to give a special “Thank You” to my wife, Elizabeth. She is the most supportive and understanding woman I know. If you wouldn’t have been on board with me from the start then the business wouldn’t be where it is today! I would also like to take this opportunity to give a public "Thank You" to the following people for teaching and mentoring me during the last several years. If you all hadn't taken the time to teach a young kid about reptiles and the industry, I wouldn't be where I am today! |
